Impact starter grants

This funding scheme provides funding for short-term impact projects of up to 3 months either based at the University or on a placement at a partner business or other non-academic organisation.

Funding is available to support EPSRC-funded academics and researchers with the costs of initial engagement with non-academic research users, assessing the market potential of early stage technologies and short-term impact projects up to 3 months in duration. Funding can also be used to support short-term industry placements to transfer knowledge from EPSRC funded research.

Funding of up to £20 000 per project is now available for the following categories of expenditure:

  • Staff time for
    • an impact project at the University, or
    • on secondment to a partner organisation
  • Travel/conferences
  • Workshops/events
  • Public engagement
  • Technology road-mapping
  • Consultancy for market research/business planning

All projects must demonstrate a clear link to EPSRC-funded research.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and should be submitted to on the application form

New approaches to impact

Adventurous Impact Funding

This funding call will enable new types of impact project to be undertaken, testing experimental approaches to creating impact from research. Successful applications will demonstrate creative and innovative “outside the box” approaches to creating economic and/or social impact from research. Funding will only be approved to support projects which do not qualify for one of categories of projects supported by the EPSRC IAA below.

Applications will be assessed on a competitive basis and must be submitted on the application form, by email to by the deadline of 31 July 2021.

Early stage commercialisation

Follow-on Fund

The Follow-on Fund is designed to support the early stage development of technology to make the idea more attractive for commercial investment. The fund is open to develop ideas which have arisen from EPSRC-funded research, which may be either research grants or studentships.

Strategic engagement with business

Partnership Development Awards

Partnership Development Awards are available to pump-prime collaborations with industry partners. The fund is open to research projects within EPSRC remit which will kick-start collaborations with companies who have significant potential to become future business partners for the University.

Flexible support for secondments and placements

Knowledge Transfer Fellowships

Funds are available to support 3-12 month Knowledge Transfer Fellowships. Each Fellowship will transfer knowledge and expertise linked to EPSRC research between the University and a partner organisation. The Fellowship will fund a researcher or member of academic staff to undertake a placement within a business or other partner organisation. Fellowships are also open to company employees to spend time working in a University department to facilitate knowledge transfer.

Early Career Researcher Impact Grants

This funding scheme will enable EPSRC-funded early career researchers to investigate and develop early-stage opportunities for impact from their research. The scheme is open to postdoctoral researchers and recent PhD graduates at University of Cambridge.  Funding can be used, for example, for feasibility studies, prototype development, software development, investigating potential markets and applications, or other projects with potential for economic and/or social impact.
